The Google Chrome Ad Blocker – Endorsed by A Tampa Marketing Firm

Chrome Browser Ad Blocker Endorsed By Plain White T-Shirt Marketing

Now, why would a Tampa marketing firm be endorsing Chrome’s new ad blocker software?

Well, it only blocks the ads that violate the terms that Google has set out.  These are the ads that tell you you have been “infected” and to click to fix and won’t let you get off the page.  These are the ads that make people opt out of seeing ALL the ads.

This is actually a helper to AdWords, Google’s big money maker. Pretty much all of their ads will flow through the new Spam net with ease.  This is a huge deal if you are involved in local marketing.  In Tampa, it is pretty competitive and everyone is trying to get an advantage. This will certainly change some things for some places like Tampa bars and car dealership ads.

Here are the chrome browser ads that are going to be blocked:

  • Pop ups
  • Auto play video with sound
  • Ads that cover the whole screen and can’t be closed
  • Ads that are large and cover most of the screen and have to be clicked to close. (These are some of the worst, as what happens when you click, it activates an “Action”, that opens another window or tab and puts you on another site.)
  • Certain countdown ads. These are the ones that don’t allow you to see a site until the seconds go down with no way of getting off.

These ads are especially problematic with mobile sites, the current darling of the Google ecosystem.  The Google Chrome ad blocker effectively kills lots of these ads on mobile sites.

There are issues with this on some fronts.  Some companies feel that Google is too big for its britches and should let the consumer determine if they want to visit or avoid sites that show these types of ads.

Last year, Google even got fined in the EU for being too heavy-handed in putting Google Shopping results first. Not a $50 ticket fine, a $3.5 BILLION dollar fine!

When a company works on Google AdWords network, they are restricted to the types of ads you can display.   If I want to advertise my ice cream shop in Tampa, I can’t create a “you scream, I scream, for Ice Cream” video that is loud and make it play automatically.  However, I can make an ad follow you around if you searched for ice cream on maps.

It will be interesting to see how local advertisers in Tampa and beyond react to the Google Chrome ad blocker and how it will change how multimedia ads are done.
